March, originally named Martius, after Mars, the Roman god of war and father of Romulus, the founder of Rome, is the third month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The month of Martius was the first month of the year in the original ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus, most likely due to his importance and being the father of Romulus, and was under the tutelage of Minerva, goddess of wisdom. Martius was also temporarily named Felix by Commodus, after one of his names. March is the second month with thirty-one days (after January and before May, July, August, October, and December).
