June, formerly named Iunius (Junius), likely named for Juno, queen of Olympus, or Juventas, her daughter and goddess of youth, is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The month of Iunius was the fourth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus, founder of Rome, where March was the first month of the year. Iunius was also temporarily named Aelius by Commodus, after one of his names, which he presumably took to identify himself with Lucius Aelius, former heir to the throne. June is the second month with thirty days (after April and before September and November).
