July, commonly abbreviated "Jul." and originally named Quintilus, meaning "fifth", is the seventh month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The month of Quintilis was the fifth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus, founder of Rome, where March was the first month of the year, and was under the tutelage of Jupiter, king of Olympus. Quintillis was also temporarily named Aelius by Commodus, after one of his names, which he presumably took to identify himself with Lucius Aelius, former heir to the throne. It was renamed in 44 BC in honor of Julius Caesar, uncle of Augustus and Roman dictator. It is the fourth month with thirty-one days (after January, March, and May and before August, October, and December).
