August, commonly abbreviated "Aug." and originally named Sextilis, meaning "sixth" is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The month of Sextilis was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus, founder of Rome, where March was the first month of the year. Sextilis was also temporarily named Commodus by the Roman emperor of the same name, after himself, while the name of "Augustus" was moved to September. It was renamed in 8 BC in honor of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. It is the fifth month with thirty-one days (after January, March, May, and July and before October and December).
