The Jasmine Dragon was a traditional tea shop in the Upper ring of Ba Sing Se in the Fifth Age of the Sun. The shop was once a failing business but was revived in Spring 33,255 when taken over by Iroh.

History

The Jasmine Dragon was originally a failing business in the upper ring of Ba Sing Se during the final stages of the Hundred Year War and eventually came into the possession of the merchant Quon. In the spring of 33,255, Quon discovered an incredibly skilled tea maker with a job at the Pao Family Tea House by the name of Mushi, secretly the former prince and general Iroh of the Fire Nation, hiding from the Fire Nation with his nephew Prince Zuko as fugitives, and offered him his own tea shop as well as an apartment. Much to Pao's dismay, Iroh readily accepted.

Business picked up quickly at the newly-named Jasmine Dragon and Iroh's fame as a tea maker increased to the point where he was formally invited to serve tea to Earth King Kuei. However, the invitation was actually a trap laid by Zuko's sister Princess Azula and Zuko was imprisoned in the Crystal Catacmobs. Iroh worked with Team Avatar to try to save his nephew, but Zuko betrayed the group and joined Azula, resulting in the Dai Li capturing Iroh, as well as Avatar Aang's temporary death. Azula and the Fire Nation incarcerated Iroh in the Capital City Prison, leaving the Jasmine Dragon unattended and Ba Sing Se occupied by the Fire Nation.

Months later, on the autumn equinox, Ba Sing Se was liberated by the Order of the White Lotus, led by the now-freed Iroh himself. Soon afterward, Iroh reopened the Jasmine Dragon and served tea to the young war heroes of Team Avatar, where Sokka attempted to draw a painting of the group and Aang and Katara began their relationship.

The following year, Aang brought the now-Fire Lord Zuko to the Jasmine Dragon to rest in the aftermath of the Battle for Yu Dao. Aang also severed his spiritual connection to Avatar Roku on the roof of the tea shop; he and Zuko then decided to begin a search for the Fire Lord's mother Ursa.

Appearance

Exterior

The Jasmine Dragon is a large and exquisite building. Two separate, broad stone steps lead up to a neatly paved patio in front of the tea shop, the patio sporting a large, rectangular fountain with a statue in its center. The terrace's elevated position provides a panoramic view over Ba Sing Se.

Wide, stone steps stand before the wooden, double front door at the center of the building. At both sides of the door is a large, round decorative window and located above the door is a black sign decorated with carefully applied golden letters to form the name of the shop. The sign is flanked by two slim, elegant golden dragons. A large copper flowerpot sporting a neatly trimmed green bush stands at each corner of the shop.

The building sports eighteen windows, nine on each side of the door, all facing the street. Each window is made of wood of a rich deep brown color, and each has yellow shutters. The windows are on hinges, allowing them to fully swing open to let in the warm air of the Earth Kingdom and to let the sweet, inviting aroma of tea spread to passersby.[1]

Trivia

  • Iroh briefly considered "The Tea Weevil" as a possible name for the Jasmine Dragon, but he quickly deemed the idea absurd.
