The Fire Nation was one of the four nations on Arda for much of the Fifth Age of the Wheel of Time. The Fire Nation was an absolute monarchy led by the Fire Lord and home to most firebenders.

The Fire Nation was the second largest nation in terms of area, following the Earth Kingdom, and had the most powerful economy of all the nations. The Fire Nation was the strongest and most advanced country on Arda until the foundation of the United Republic of Nations. The capital of the Fire Nation is known simply as the Fire Nation Capital and is guarded by the Great Gates of Azulon, named for Fire Lord Azulon of the 34th millennium.

History

Origin (Fourth Age — early Fifth Age)

The predecessors of the Fire Nation originated from the descendants of the third Avatar, Rand al'Thor (often Anglicized Randall Tor), in the Fourth Age. Eventually this people settled in the western hemisphere, along the equator.

The civilization of the Sun Warriors flourished and had a tremendous influence on the later Fire Nation, but eventually went into hiding. The war-torn states were collectively known as the Fire Islands and controlled by violent enemy warlords. The warlord Toz indirectly caused the creation of the dark spirits of the Kemurikage, who haunted the warlords until one individual took control, united the Fire Islands, and became known as the first Fire Lord, the leader of the Fire Sages. Eventually, the Fire Lord split from the Sages, assumed political power for himself, and changed the Fire Nation's religious rule into an autocratic empire ruled by his family.

Prosperity and progress (early Fifth Age33,155)

Over the course of the following centuries, the Fire Nation's urbanization and cultivation steadily progressed over several dynasties. The komodo rhino was first domesticated under the rule of the Pho Zei Dynasty and remained the primary beast of burden in the Fire Nation until after the Hundred Year War. The Fire Nation also fought many wars but experienced a long era of peace from no later than 32,885 onward. During this era of great prosperity and modernization were born Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin.

Although Roku and Sozin were once very close friends, they eventually drifted apart due to varying ideas. While Roku believed strongly in the world's balance and peace, Sozin desired to "share" the prosperity of the Fire Nation with the rest of Arda. The Fire Lord initiated a number of reforms to militarize the country, decreasing both spirituality and respect for life, leading to the near extinction of dragons and brutalization of the traditional dueling art of Agni Kai. Beginning with Yu Dao, the Fire Nation established several colonies in the weaker Earth Kingdom, which quickly became local industrial centers. Roku discovered this in the year 33,118 and put an end to Sozin's expansionism with a threat on his life. However, at Roku's death twenty-five years later, Sozin resumed his politics.

Imperialism and the war (33,15533,255)

With the coming of Sozin's comet on the autumn equinox twelve years later, in 33,155, Sozin chose to use the firebending-enhancing comet to launch the infamous Air Nomad Genocide on the Air Temples to kill the next Avatar, a male Air Nomad by the name of Aang. The Air Nomads were completely annihilated, but the Avatar himself was nowhere to be found.
