"I wasn't there when the Fire Nation attacked my people. I'm going to make a difference this time."
— Aang to Tribal Chief Arnook of the Northern Water Tribe[src]

Avatar Aang was a male Air Nomad and the Avatar during the time span surrounding the Hundred Year War. Immediately succeeding Roku as the Avatar, Aang learned he was the Avatar four years earlier than usual and ran away from the Southern Air Temple when he learned that he would be taken away from his guardian, the monk Gyatso. During the process, Aang was frozen in an iceberg for a century as the beginning and middle stages of the Hundred Year War unraveled around him.

Aang was eventually rescued by Katara and Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe. By the time he emerged, the Fire Nation had nearly conquered the Four Nations and with the exception of Aang, completely eradicated the Air Nomads. Aang played a major role during the war's final stages, including the defense of the Northern Water Tribe during the Siege of the North. Aang later visited Ba Sing Se but was unable to prevent Fire Princess Azula and the Dai Li from capturing the city, and effectively the remainder of the Earth Kingdom, during his time there. Azula killed Aang while he was in the Avatar State, ending the Avatar Cycle, but Aang was soon revived by Katara, using spirit water, restoring the Cycle. Aang continued his training and eventually learned energybending. He then used his new ability to strip Phoenix King Ozai of his firebending and defeat him in the Battle at Wulong Forest, ending the war. Aang later founded the Air Acolytes and, after a number of important deeds, married Katara; the two parented children Kapmee, Kyuesh, and Wiuje before Aang passed away at the relatively young biological age of 65 and was reincarnated in the Southern Water Tribe as the girl Cora.
