— Aang to Tribal Chief Arnook of the Northern Water Tribe[src] |
Avatar Aang was a male Air Nomad and the Avatar during the time span surrounding the Hundred Year War. Immediately succeeding Roku as the Avatar, Aang learned he was the Avatar four years earlier than usual and ran away from the Southern Air Temple when he learned that he would be taken away from his guardian, the monk Gyatso. During the process, Aang was frozen in an iceberg for a century as the beginning and middle stages of the Hundred Year War unraveled around him.
Aang was eventually rescued by Katara and Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe. By the time he emerged, the Fire Nation had nearly conquered the Four Nations and with the exception of Aang, completely eradicated the Air Nomads. Aang played a major role during the war's final stages, including the defense of the Northern Water Tribe during the Siege of the North. Aang later visited Ba Sing Se but was unable to prevent Fire Princess Azula and the Dai Li from capturing the city, and effectively the remainder of the Earth Kingdom, during his time there. Azula killed Aang while he was in the Avatar State, ending the Avatar Cycle, but Aang was soon revived by Katara, using spirit water, restoring the Cycle. Aang continued his training and eventually learned energybending. He then used his new ability to strip Phoenix King Ozai of his firebending and defeat him in the Battle at Wulong Forest, ending the war. Aang later founded the Air Acolytes and, after a number of important deeds, married Katara; the two parented children Kapmee, Kyuesh, and Wiuje before Aang passed away at the relatively young biological age of 65 and was reincarnated in the Southern Water Tribe as the girl Cora.
Abilities
- Airbending/Aerokinesis: Air was Aang's natural element, in which Aang was extremely proficient. Aang mastered thirty-five of thirty-six tiers of airbending and invented the "air scooter" technique at the mere age of twelve.
- Waterbending/Hydrokinesis: Aang was also a powerful waterbender and could easily create a huge wave on his first try. Aang was also able to extinguish a powerful blast of fire from Ozai powered by Sozin's Comet.
- Earthbending/Geokinesis: Although Earth was Aang's natural opposite and he had difficulty utilizing it at first, earthbending eventually became his second-most used fighting style behind airbending. Aang, however, preferred a defensive style of earthbending that reflected his pacifistic nature better.
- Firebending/Pyrokinesis: After accidentally burning Katara while learning firebending from Jeong Jeong, Aang was reluctant to use firebending. However, when he eventually learned the true meaning of firebending from the dragons Ran and Shaw, Aang overcame his fear and was an extremely powerful firebender, able to melt solid stone.
- Electrobending/Electrokinesis: Zuko taught Aang lightning redirection during preparation for the Battle at Wulfong Forest and Aang used it to defend himself against Ozai.
- Energybending/Ergokinesis: Aang was the first Avatar in centuries, if not millennia, to learn the ancient art of energybending. He learned from the last lion turtle and was able to use it to strip Phoenix King Ozai of his firebending ability.
- Avatar Spirit: As the Avatar, Aang was able to communicate with his past lives, especially his immediate predecessor, Roku. Aang could also visit the Spirit World through deep meditation.
Trivia
- Aang became a fully realized Avatar more quickly than any other known Avatar, within only twelve months.
- At the coronation of Fire Lord Zuko, Aang wore a necklace similar to the one on Gyatso's skeleton.
- Aang, Roku, and Kyoshi all defied the leader of their respective nations. Aang ran away from the Southern Air Temple instead of moving to the Eastern Air Temple as told, Roku nearly killed Fire Lord Sozin in an attempt to prevent the Hundred Year War, and Kyoshi refused to aid the 46th Earth King during the Peasant Uprising in Ba Sing Se.
- Aang's favorite food is egg custard tart.
