"Ilúvatar was the first beginning, and beyond that no wisdom of the Valar or of Eldar or of Men can go."
"Who was Ilúvatar? Was he of the Gods?"
"Nay, that he was not, for he made them. Ilúvatar is the Lord for Always who dwells beyond the world; who made it and is not of it nor in it, but loves it.

Biography

Creating Eä

The true origins of the mysterious being known as Eru Ilúvatar remain a mystery. A similar being known as Primus is thought to be the creator of life and the universe on the planet of Cybertron, as well as said planet's core, and is most likely either a corruption of a story of or a vakha of Ilúvatar. Ilúvatar is said to be simultaneously the twin and creator of Shai'tan, the true name belonging to the Dark One, or the Source of Evil and the Shadow. At some point in time, Ilúvatar created the Ainur and eventually began to create worlds, perhaps most notably the one eventually split into Bachland and , known as Gloria Mundi, where he sent two of his Valar, Manwë, the one closest to Ilúvatar, and his brother Melkor, the strongest. Directly following the creation of this world, in an ambiguous amount of time, Il´vatar and the Ainur imprisoned Shai'tan in Shayol Ghul.

Melkor's Rebellion

Melkor, however, had been corrupted by a tiny sliver of the soul of Shai'tan having avoided imprisonment. Although Ilúvatar was able to delay the effects, Melkor eventually succumbed and rebelled against Ilúvatar and the rest of the Ainur. Initiating the First War and the Marring of Arda, Melkor continued his sins, gaining followers in the Ainur such as Sauron, Morier, and the Balrogs and destroying the Two Lamps. Upon his killing the Two Trees, slaying Finwë, and stealing the Silmarils, Melkor was named Morgoth ("Black Enemy") by Finwë's son and the Silmarils' creator, Fëanor and was known by that name until being cast into the Doors of Night, through which he later joined the rest of Shai'tan's soul.

Age of Prophecy and legacy

"IT IS NOT HERE. I WILL TAKE NO PART. ONLY THE CHOSEN ONE CAN DO WHAT MUST BE DONE, IF HE WILL."
"Where?"
"NOT HERE.
"
— A voice, possibly Ilúvatar, speaking mysteriously to Rand al'Thor concerning "it", which is not "here" (Eye of the World).[src]

By the Age of Prophecy, Ilúvatar was known solely as the Creator of the world and the Wheel of Time, with few additional, minor details. As it was common knowledge that Il´vatar would not intervene directly with the affairs of humans, the only organization specifically related to the Creator or the Light was the infamous Children of the Light, an extremist military organization founded by Lothair Mantelar to expose Darkfriends, generally harboring several unfounded, or loosely founded at the very least, beliefs about Aes Sedai and wolves.

Despite Ilúvatar's lack of involvement with , a mysterious voice spoke to Rand al'Thor at the Eye of the World concerning an "it" and was possibly Ilúvatar's own.

Personality and traits

Ilúvatar's physical description is indeterminate and changes at will, although "he" is personified as male. Ilúvatar represents all of humanity's best traits, with none of the negative ones, and created Shai'tan, according to some legends, to give humans free will.

Trivia

  • Ilúvatar is associated with the concept of Bendu, balance, although this is somewhat inaccurate, as Ilúvatar represents pure good. This association is likely related with the fact that Ilúvatar will not intervene with the affairs of directly as to maintain humans' balance and free will.
