Etymology

Weasley is a Norman form of the English town name Westley ("west clearing, west woodland").

Arthur is a mythological Welsh name with many possible meanings, including "bear", "king", "man", and also an old Roman family.

Charles is a French form of the Germanic name Karl ("man"). Charlie is an English diminutive (or feminine form) of this name.

Dominique is a French form of the Roman name Dominicus ("of God").

Fred can be a diminutive of forms of the Anglo-Saxon name Ælfræd ("elf counsel") or the Germanic names Friduric ("peaceful ruler") and Meginfrid ("strength and peace").

George is an English and Romanian form of the Greek name Georgios ("earthworker, farmer").

Ginevra is an Italian form of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar ("white phantom"). Ginny, here used as a diminutive form of Ginevra, is usually used as an English diminutive of the Roman family name Verginius, associated with the meaning "maid, virgin".

Hugo is a Latinized form of the Germanic name Hugh ("heart, mind, spirit").

Louis is a French form of the Germanic name Chlodovech ("famous battle").

Percy is an English name derived from the Roman name Persius, possibly related to the Etruscan word φersu ("mask"). Percy is also sometimes used as a diminutive of the English name Percival, a form of the Welsh name Peredur ("hard spears").

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Assuming that he was at least seventeen years old when his son Arthur Weasley was born in 1950 CE, Septimus must have been born no later than 1933 CE and died before more than the year before Arthur's birth. Similarly, Cedrella cannot have died before Arthur's birth.
  2. Cedrella's younger sister was born in 1919 CE, meaning she must have been born by then.
