— Tartarus to Iapetus[[{{{4}}}|[src]]]

Tartaros (Tartaros) (pronunciation: TAR-tur-us) is the son of Chaos and Greco-Roman aspect of Arato (Bogan), vakha of evil, as well as the abyss where monsters reform. Tartarus became the third husband of Gaea (after Ouranos and Pontus) and fathered the Gigantes, the giants intent on destroying and replacing the Olympians, and Typhon, with the same purpose. Both failed and Gaea was lulled back into sleep, while Tartarus remained.

Tartarus also consumed his son Damasen, the only peaceful Gigantes, when he enraged Gaea. Tartarus rarely assumed human form, until he was offended and called a "stinking pit" by his stepson Krios. Tartarus lashed out at the Titans and attempted to kill the demigods Perseus Jackson and Annabeth Chase, but was blocked by Damasen and Tartarus's Titanic stepson Iapetus.

Notes and references

  1. Tartarus was evidently born before his step-grandson Zeus, who was born before 2902 BC. (See Zeus page for more information.)
