Saturnus (Saturn) (Latin sero: to sow) was the king of the Titans and lord of time, harvest, and wealth, as well as the Roman aspect of Kronos and the vakha Coiasira. Saturn was the twelfth and final Titanic child of Caelus and Terra, becoming extremely ambitious as a result, leading Saturn to be the only one to agree to Terra's plan to kill Caelus as payback for throwing their Elder Cyclops and Hecatoncheire children into Tartarus.

Saturn proceeded to become king of the universe, but became a tyrannical king after being obsessed with Caelus's prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, leading him to swallow his children. His sister and wife Ops managed to save their last child, Jupiter, however, leading to him growing up to rescue his siblings, overthrow Saturn, and throw him into Tartarus after the Titanomachy.

After many failed attempts to return and trick demigods into helping him, Saturn ensnared the support of Luke Castellan, son of Mercury. Castellan attempted to steal the Master Bolt and Helm of Darkness and bring them to Saturn, but failed and was caught by Mars. However, Castellan tricked Mars into keeping the Bolt and Helm to start a war between the Olympians. Saturn then used Castellan's body as a vessel to return to the mortal world and destroy the Olympians' thrones to eliminate them. However, Castellan was able to stab himself to kill himself and scatter Saturn, ending his threat.

Abilities

As the son of Caelus and Terra, the Titan king of Othrys, and the father of the Big Three, Saturn is an incredibly powerful force and can control time itself.

  • Prowess in Battle: Saturn is extremely skilled and experienced in physical combat even for a Titan, and was also tactically powerful, described as Perseus Jackson as "never where you expected".
  • Chronokinesis: Saturn can control and manipulate time itself, particularly relishing the destructive capabilities of time and finding speeding time up to age mortals amusing.
  • Hypnokinesis: Saturn can invade the dreams of even Olympians, such as Mars.
  • Electrokinesis: Saturn can send down powerful lightning bolts, although his ability to do so is far inferior than that of his son Jupiter.
  • Titanic Energy: Like other Titans, Saturn can release a blast of energy from his body.
  • Titanic Divine Form: Saturn possesses an extremely violent divine form which incinerates any mortal being in his presence.
  • Primordial Language: Saturn is completely fluent in the Primordial Language, which was spoken by the Protogenoi, Titans, Elder Cyclopes, and Hecatoncheires.
  • Manipulation: Saturn is a master of manipulation, being able to persuade four of his brothers to help kill Caelus despite being the youngest. Saturn was also able to persuade demigods and even minor Olympians to join his cause, as well as manipulate Mars to attempt to start a war between Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto.

Trivia

  • As the youngest Titan, Saturn was initially ignored by both Caelus and Terra, who could not even remember his name.
  • Although Saturn is the Titan of harvest, Ceres claims that he does not care for agriculture.
  • Saturn and Jupiter have numerous similarities.
    • Both are the youngest siblings of their respective brethren (Titans, Elder Olympians)
    • Both hated their fathers (Caelus, Saturn) for ill-treating their children (Elder Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires, Elder Olympians) and were convinced by their mothers (Terra, Ops) to overthrow them. They then overthrew their fathers with Kronos's Scythe and the aid of their siblings.
    • Both freed the Elder Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires and received an object (Othrys, Master Bolt) made by the monsters as gifts.
    • Both ruled as Lords of the Universe and were the leaders of their own families.
    • Both fell in love with and married their elder sisters (Ops and Juno) as their queens.
    • Both are/were cursed to be overthrown by their children (Jupiter, unknown)
    • Both swallowed at least one of their children (Vesta, Ceres, Juno, Pluto, Neptune; Athena)
    • Both cheated on their wives at some point.
    • Saturn also shares at least one trait with each of his other children.
      • Like Vesta, Saturn did not wish to marry at all, albeit only initially.
      • Like Ceres, Saturn is associated with harvest, despite not caring much for it.
      • Like Juno, Saturn had an infamous and fearsome temper.
      • Like Pluto, Saturn was feared by all of his siblings, nephews, and nieces, and both of their respective palaces have/had pure black obsidian exteriors.
      • Like Neptune, Saturn had an unpredictable sense of humor, although Neptune's is not nearly as cruel and sadistic.
  • Saturn is the namesake of the sixth planet in the solar system from the sun, named after him for its similarity to the planet Jupiter.

Notes and references

  1. Saturn was evidently born before his son Jupiter, who was born before 2902 BC. (See Jupiter page for more information.)
