October, meaning eight, is the tenth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. October was the eighth month of the year in the original ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus, founder of Rome, hence its name, and was under the tutelage of Mars, god of war and father of Romulus. October was also temporarily named Herculeus by Commodus, after one of his names, taken to identify himself with his idol and patron god Hercules. October is the sixth month with thirty-one days (after January, March, May, July, and August, and before December).
