February, formerly named Februarius, Latin februum "purging", is the second month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The month of Februarius was the twelfth month of the year, thought to be added to Romulus's original ten-month calendar by Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, and was under the tutelage of Neptune, god of the sea. Februarius was also temporarily named Invictus by Commodus, after one of his names, an epithet meaning "unconquered", "invincible", and used by deities such as Jupiter, Mars, Sol, and Commodus's idol and patron god Hercules. February is the only month to have a number of days other than thirty or thirty-one (28.25).
