April, formerly named Aprilis, likely derived from aperio, aperire, apertus, a verb meaning "to open", is the fourth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The month of Aprilis was the second month of the year in the original ten-month Roman calendar established by Romulus, founder of Rome, and was under the tutelage of Venus, goddess of love and gardens. Aprilis was also temporarily named Pius by Commodus, after one of his names, which he most likely took from his grandfather Antonius Pius. April is the first month with thirty days (before June, September, and November).
