"Even if I were certain (who will die), I could not say. I tell you this because you are my son. You know that some deaths cannot be prevented. Some deaths should not be prevented. When the time comes, you may need to act."
— Hades to his son Nico di Angelo[[{{{4}}}|[src]]]

Lord Haides (Hades) is the Olympian of the Greek Underworld and riches, as well as Greek aspect of Pluto and the vakha Ba. The eldest son of Kronos and Rhea, Hades was swallowed whole by his father immediately upon birth. Hades was then rescued by his brother Zeus, who overthrew Kronos. Although Hades was Kronos's heir and eldest son, he agreed to share his birthright with his brothers in a game of dice. Hades got the worst roll and therefore became god of the Underworld.

Hades also married his niece Persephone after abducting her with permission from Zeus, sparking rivalry with his sister and Persephone's mother Demeter, who had Persephone for spring and summer while Hades had her for autumn and winter. However, Hades was not completely faithful, having demigod children such as Lynkos.

Millennia later, during World War II, Hades fathered Bianca and Nico di Angelo. When the Great Prophecy was issued, however, he refused to hand over his children to Camp Half-Blood. A fearful Zeus attempted to kill the children but instead killed their mother, Maria di Angelo, causing Hades to resent his brother even more. He then had the children hidden in the Lotus Hotel and Casino for nearly seventy years before cursing the Oracle of Delphi, leading to a series of events that would cause the Great Prophecy to come true.

During the Quest for the Master Bolt, Hades was suspected of having masterminding the thievery of the Master Bolt and framing Poseidon to expand his kingdom and take over Olympus. However, Hades's own Helm of Darkness, as well as the Bolt, were actually stolen by Luke Castellan to start a war. Hades also blamed Poseidon and his son Perseus Jackson for stealing the Bolt and Helm and lured him to the Underworld by holding his mother captive. However, Jackson escaped after revealing the Master Bolt (given to him by Ares as a trick) and then proved his innocence to the Erinyes and returned the Helm.

Three years later, Hades attempted to hold Jackson prisoner in the Underworld, but he escaped with help from Nico di Angelo, who encouraged him to bathe in the River Styx and accept the Curse of Achilles. Jackson then attacked Hades's undead soldiers and the god himself, who escaped. Di Angelo eventually convinced Hades to defend Olympus in the Battle of Manhattan along with Persephone and Demeter. The three gods then played a major role in the battle and helped defeat Kronos once again.

Hades was incapacitated during the Great Divine Schism but managed to speak to di Angelo and warn him that one member of the Demigods of Seven would die, and also that some deaths cannot and should not be prevented. Hades also contributed to the Battle in Athens by invisibly battling the Gigantes as well as opening abysses leading to Tartarus under fallen Gigantes. Hades's advice to di Angelo was remembered when he witnessed the death of Octavian and did not attempt to prevent it.

Abilities

As one of the Big Three, Hades has the ultimate powers an Olympian can possess, only rivaled by his brothers Zeus and Poseidon.

  • Necromancy: Hades has divine authority and absolute control over the deceased as Lord of the Greek Underworld.
  • Umbrakinesis: Hades has absolute control over shadows and darkness. Hades can shoot solid bolts of darkness and solidify shadows into virtually impenetrable shields that can deflect even Zeus's thunderbolts, as well as use shadows to cover himself in darkness and become invisible.
  • Ferrokinesis: Hades can sense, summon, and manipulate any quantity of precious metals and jewels as the god of wealth.
  • Dark Infernal Pyrokinesis: Hades has absolute control over black hellfire, which turns whatever it touches into liquid.
  • Cryokinesis: Hades can produce an aura of intense cold.
  • Transfiguration: As a god, Hades can transfigure even sentient life forms, such as the Oceanid Leuke, who was transformed into a poplar tree.
  • Shapeshifting: Although he rarely uses this ability, Hades can shapeshift as a god.
