Annabeth Chase is the Greek demigod daughter of Frederick Chase and Athena. When Chase was five years old, her father married a mortal woman. He and his wife had two twin children together, making Chase feel unwanted. After three nightly spider attacks inflicted by Arachne, she ran away from home at the age of seven and survived for months with only her mother's guidance and a mortal hammer. Chase eventually met demigods Thalia Grace and Luke Castellan and joined them, Castellan giving her a celestial bronze knife to defend herself.

After months together, Chase, Grace, and Castellan were hurried to Camp Half-Blood, escorted by satyr Grover Underwood. While Chase, Castellan, and Underwood made it safely, Grace was transformed by Zeus into a pine tree to save her life.

Four years later, Castellan, who was secretly serving Kronos stole the Master Bolt and gave it to Ares, framing Poseidon and his son Perseus Jackson in the process. Jackson, Underwood, and Chase journeyed to retrieve the Bolt (later also the Helm of Darkness) and succeeded. Castellan then attempted to kill Jackson in August and left the camp, beginning the Second Titanomachy. Chase helped retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Sea of Monsters and was abducted by Thorn and tricked into holding the sky up. Chase's place was later taken by Artemis, and the two were rescued by Jackson, Grace (who had been taken out of her tree), and Zoë Nightshade, a Hunter of Artemis. Chase led the quest to find Daedalus, her half-brother, and ultimately co-led the Battle of Manhattan alongside Jackson, playing a large role in Kronos's defeat.

Shortly after Jackson and Chase began a relationship, the former was taken to Camp Jupiter by Hera, who sent Jason Grace (Thalia's long-lost brother) in his place. Grace deduced that Jackson had been taken to Camp Jupiter. However, Minerva, Chase's mother's Roman form demanded she kill Jackson and all the New Romans and gave her the Mark of Athena. After stopping at Camp Jupiter and picking up Jackson, Hazel Levesque, and Frank Zhang, Chase became the de facto leader of the Demigods of Seven on the Argo II. Although Chase faced Arachne and secured the Athena Parthenos, Arachne dragged both Chase and Jackson into Tartarus. However, they both escaped with the aid of Iapetus and Damasen. Chase also defended in the Attack on Camp Half-Blood.

A year later, Chase visited Boston to look for her cousin Magnus Chase and discovered that he is a Norse demigod.
